HELP ME START MY BUSINESS!
Yes, you read it correctly. I'm asking you a friend, associate, or maybe a perfect stranger to donate towards my start-up. Ridiculous? Maybe, but we need to get this economy kick started and I have several business ideas that I think can take part in our national economic recovery. I haven't fooled myself into thinking any of these concepts is the next Microsoft, but they are solid business models with well-thought out plans. What I'm lacking is seed money to launch them. What's in it for you? Read on! Traditional resources, such as banks, have all but dried up. Investors are skittish about start-ups, and my ideas are too small to catch the attention of so called "Angel Investors" or VC firms. They are looking for the big fish. Now, in case you are wondering if I've tried the other resources the answer is yes. Turned down by the bank because the underwriting company said we did not fit the profile they wanted (though our loan office said she would invest in a minute if she had the dough). Had one private investor committed, but could not obtain the others we needed to launch. VC firms would not give us the time of day. For that particular business we dissolved the corporation after 2 years of trying and counted the lessons learned as valuable. The concept though is still viable. Given the resources we could launch our first product inside a year.
OK, wind the wayback machine to today and you can see that I started a consulting firm. I kind of backed into this because, as I was looking for work I was not getting job offers, but did receive offers for contract/consulting work. Also, I was volunteering time as a business consultant through online forums. Long story short: One more job interview that turned into a consultant interview and I decided to make it official. With that I created Biz Dev 4 Humanz a business consulting company.
So, I've got my own company, why am I asking for help? Because it's a start-up and I'm not break-even yet. Plus, some of the other biz ideas to which I can apply my considerable experience are possible, now that I'm not flying all over the country every week. I've got great marketing skills and the ability to do it on a shoe string, but it still takes time to bring everything up to speed to reach break even. I'm doing everything I can to make this a success. I am man enough to admit when I could use a little help and this is one of those times.
Now, to answer the question I proffered in the beginning: What is in it for you?
Well, nothing in the way of equity in the company(ies). Not that I wouldn't like to do so (remember we tried the private investor route before). It is much more complex and complicates things if that is done and the company needs to incorporate, etc. It's just not viable to do so, as well as illegal, if we don't follow SEC rules to the letter. It's simply much more expensive to go that route and we are doing this on a shoe string.
What I can offer is an experience. A gift of insight into a start-up (or multiple start-ups, maybe) that will only be available to those that choose to donate. That insight will come in the form of a blog that will document an inside view of what I am doing to make the business successful. The reason I believe that this can be valuable is because of the years of business development experience I have and how I have gained and continue to gain knowledge and experience. That knowledge is available to anyone, if they know how to find it, and the experience is transferable.
OK, here's the teaser: I actually have 2 business ventures that I've started right now, both in early stages. Both, mind you, that I "backed into" simply because I was at the right time, with the right people to make it happen. A year ago, heck a month before I started Biz Dev 4 Humanz I would not have envisioned this occurring. What that means to you is the blog will give you special insight to 2 business concepts, including, networking, start-up, costs, planning, marketing, etc. I will blog about things that most businesses won't divulge. For you, that could mean that you'll gain some specific information, tools, or resources that you could use to make your own business or money-making idea come to fruition. This is going to be a down and dirty, little details, progress and progression report of what I have and will do to create, grow and sustain these businesses.
If you've stayed with me thus far then maybe you have a vision too. The idea of participating, in some fashion, in a start-up is appealing to you or you have your own dreams, but no idea how to execute them. That or just curiosity may be enough to convince your to take a chance and donate a few dollars to join this effort and gain access to an inside view of a new company or two (or 3 or 4...) . If that describes you, then I'm asking for a $25 donation to gain access to the Help Me Start My Business! Blog for 1 year. You can choose to donate more if you wish and you'll be given the opportunity to extend your subscription when it expires. Early adopters rejoice! I believe that it's a bargain given the insight the blog offers.
